Gulfstream Aeronautical Interior Visualization
Contract CG Artist/Modeler
SCAD CLC students were given a design challenge by Gulfstream Aerospace to develop a new, immersive customization tool for the visualization of their aircraft interiors. The team redesigned Gulfstream’s existing iPad applications to create a more robust & creative design tool for both the Gulfstream interior designer and the client. We delivered an aircraft customization tool that ran on desktop, mobile, and VR. Taking full advantage of Unreal Engine 4, users can pan around the interior of the aircraft and customize furniture, cabin configurations, and surface materials.
I was contracted onto the CG Art production team and contributed in the following areas:
Conversion of CAD models to realtime assets for use in UE4
Low poly and LOD creation, UV mapping, baking detail maps (Normal, AO, ID maps)
Workflow and pipeline advising
Scene setup and asset optimizations, importing, manual collision setup, I worked with a custom blueprint system that detected touch events on material groups for runtime material customization
General testing and optimization
RE-TOPOLOGIZING THE ASSETS
We originally received CAD/production render quality models from Gulfstream. The full suite of high-poly exterior and interior models needed to be retopologized to a lower poly count to run in real-time on desktop and mobile platforms. We used Unreal Engine 4 for rendering and tech. The workflow for re-topologizing involved using a combination of topogun and maya for most assets. We baked normal maps and occlusion maps to preserve detail during render and to increase performance on mobile.
BRINGING THE G450 TO LIFE
The main goal of the CG Team during the first seven weeks of the project was to adjust the 3D models of the G450 so that they could be brought effectively into Unreal Engine 4. The goal was to optimize performance inside the iPad while preserving the careful attention to detail of the original assets. For this purpose, the main focus was on the main cabin and the furniture and accessories in it; these sections were especially crucial because they represent the core of Gulfstream’s personalization experience.
